Some “old school” shooter types believe that lights and lasers on pistols are faddish and gimmicky. Other people swear by them. Here are the facts. A light on your pistol allows you to identify your target

in low-light or no-light conditions, which, according to the FBI, account for the lighting conditions in 80% of shootings. Sure, night sights are useful to a large extent, but a gun-mounted light enables you to be SURE of your target before you shoot. In addition, almost all weapon mounted lights today have some type of momentary switch. This is useful because you don’t want to have the light on until a moment or two before you acquire the target. In tactical situations, you don’t want to announce your presence until you’re set up and ready to go. “Old school” aside, weapon mounted lights give you the upper hand in the dark uncertainty, and in life-and-death situations, you can’t afford to be uncertain.

Where lights allow you to acquire your target in low-light conditions, lasers enable you to see exactly where on that target your bullet is going to hit. Where lasers really shine, no pun intended, is when shooting from the hip, across the body, or even behind you while running. The advantage is that you don’t have to be looking down the sights to know that you’re on target. Wherever the laser dot is, that’s where you’re going to hit.

In addition to the accuracy factor of weapon mounted lasers, there is the intimidation factor to contend with. Imagine its 3am, and you hear someone messing around in your garage. You grab your cell phone and your pistol with the attached laser, and you carefully go to investigate the situation. When you open the door, there is a guy standing there, a jimmied lock behind him, your toolbox in his hands, and a black ski mask on his head. You bring up your pistol up and put the laser right on his chest. He sees the laser dot on him. Now, he’s not going to fight or argue. You call the police. Everyone knows lasers work, especially the criminals. The key is to go to the range once in a while, and make sure your laser is zeroed in. Lasers also enhance the shooting capabilities of those folks who don’t shoot much, and aren’t necessarily the best shot. With a laser, they don’t have to be. Point and pull. Just be sure of your target, as well as what’s beyond it.

Sometimes, it is possible to improve upon a good thing. That is exactly the case with the Lasermax Internal Guiderod Laser. Turn It On! To activate the laser, simply push IN on the switch, which replaces the slide lock. Pushing in from either side will turn the laser on; the middle position is off.

Stream Light Tactical Lights

One of the best accessories you can add to your pistol is a light / laser combination. Think about it. It allows you to see in the dark, properly acquire your target, and know that your bullet will hit that target exactly where the red dot is.

When you think about tactical lights and lasers, what are some of the attributes that you’d want? Waterproof? Shockproof? Solidly built? Bright? Dependable? Streamlight TLR Series Tactical Lights

The Streamlight TLR-1 is a light only, with no laser, but at 80 lumens, it is very bright, and performs well in tactical situations and under pressure. If you prefer a laser alongside your light, get the TLR-2. Both the TLR-1 and TLR-2 feature an intense “hot spot” beam, as well as ample side lighting to help you safely navigate your way through dark, uncertain situations you might encounter. Activation comes in the form of an index finger operated momentary on and continuous on / off switch, and power comes from two CR123A lithium batteries, which are readily available

The TLR-2’s laser only enhances your pistol’s capability. With a Streamlight laser sight, you don’t have to look right down the sights to know that you’re on target. With the bright 650 nanometer laser, you know that wherever you see the red dot, that’s where the bullet is going to hit. In addition, you can fire from the hip, cross draw, or even with your weak hand. The laser gives a tremendous tactical advantage when it comes to aiming. The laser also gives you the upper hand when stopping an adversary. Often the sight of a red dot on your adversary’s chest will be enough to end the confrontation without a shot.

The M3 Tactical Illuminator is unique in that it has a longer burn time than almost any other tactical light. M6 and M6X:
For even brighter light, get the M6X, again for eXtreme! The M6X offers 125 lumens of bright white light, almost half again as much as the M6, plus the capability of a laser sight. All models of Insight lights and lasers come in nylon-filled polymer housings that are dust-proof in the worst sandstorm, and water proof to 66 feet. It’s a proven fact, whether you use a handgun for self-defense, recreational shooting, or in law enforcement, a well designed laser sight can greatly enhance target acquisition and improve accuracy, especially under stressful conditions.

Since their inception, laser sights have always been red. Red lasers work best in night time or low light conditions, but they cannot be seen in bright daytime. Did you know that green lasers are 50 times brighter to the naked eye than red lasers? If you can see better, you can shoot better, and green is the color that has the maximum brightness to the human eye within the visible light spectrum.

The unique Viridian green laser can be seen in the daylight, and has four settings; slow pulse, medium pulse, fast pulse, and constant on. This is to allow for shooters to tell whose laser is whose when there is more than one on the target. The Viridian green laser is rail mounted, and runs off one included CR2 lithium battery, which gives the laser up to seven hours of on-time. In addition, there is an auto shut off switch, in case you forget and leave it on.

The Viridian green laser housing is tough, too. One reviewer reported dropping his pistol with an attached Viridian green laser onto the cement in the cold rain, then he accidentally kicked it 15 feet into a 4x4 post when he tried to pick it up. Clumsy, yes, but he reported that when he picked up the pistol again, the laser not only worked, but it held its zero. Amazing!

Viridian green lasers may cost a little more than standard red lasers, but the fact that they work in the daytime justifies the cost. Whether you use your pistol for self-defense, target shooting, or in the line of duty, get yourself a Viridian green laser, and move into the daylight.
