If you only use a portion of the gift certificate, your remaining balance will stay valid until the next purchase.
Example: If you purchase 2 $25 Gift Certificates you can goto "Check Out" and see the "Edit Gift Info..." link below your Gift Certificates. There you can add the recipient name, and the from name with a message of your choice, if you choose you can click the "Ship To A Friend" box and have the gift certificate directly mailed to the recipient of your choice.
